Character: Antonio Marino, Ex-Priest (135 points)

This is a pregen character for the 1980s GURPS Horror adventures listed on the roadmap. This GURPS-O-SCOPIC character sheet is designed to be given to a new player in one of the listed adventures: You shouldn’t need any prep. There are some additional notes about this set of overall characters if you are interested.

Notes

  • Antonio is an interesting character concept in my view — he is an ex-seminary school student who wanted to be a priest and believes in his religion, but is unable to follow its doctrines because of his terrible temper and predilection for violence. Due to his attractiveness and charisma, he could be described as a combination character: Priest + Thug + Heartthrob.
  • He has dedicated himself to fighting evil spirits in an independent and unauthorized way as he did not succeed at ordination.
  • True Faith [15] is essentially a kind of proof against the supernatural. If a supernatural being is evil, your religious faith will protect you from it and you have the ability to scare it away using a religious symbol or ritual (in this case probably Antonio’s crucifix). In the default instantiation of the advantage, you must adhere to your religious faith strictly in order to receive this benefit from the advantage.
  • However, this character has the True Faith (Chosen: -0%) [15] limitation from GURPS Powers p. 84. That means that Antonio does not have to adhere to religious teachings in order for his faith to work, but he has a -3 reaction modifier from followers of rival deities, who are aware of his special power. It’s an interesting trade-off that fits well with his back story.
  • He also has Mental Strength (Will/Easy) at level 13 (Will+1). This unusual skill allows him to resist mind control spells, psionics, hypnotism, and a few other things at a level higher than his Will stat. It does not replace other Will rolls (p. B209). It normally requires Trained by a Master or Weapon Master but for this character I allowed True Faith [15] as an alternative prerequisite.
  • A new talent was used to make this character affordable for a particular adventure — talents are omitted on the GURPS-O-SCOPIC character sheet.
