Character: Luc Cardeñas, Self-Published Researcher (135 points)

This is a pregen character for the 1980s GURPS Horror adventures listed on the roadmap. This GURPS-O-SCOPIC character sheet is designed to be given to a new player in one of the listed adventures: You shouldn’t need any prep. There are some additional notes about this set of overall characters if you are interested.

Notes

  • This is a “tank” sort of character, and this tankiness is implemented in a number of ways using rules. The most obvious is Luc’s very high hit points of HP 20 [11] and his High Pain Threshold [10] allowing him to ignore some injuries.
  • If you are interested in advanced combat stuff, note that Luc’s Gigantism [0] gives this character a Size Modifier (SM) of +1 and the ability to treat people in adjacent hexes as reach “C” (close). That matters because he has the Sacrificial Parry [1] perk (p. 7 of GURPS Power-Ups 2: Perks) and he has Brawling-16 so he can parry with his arms and he gets TWO parries per combat turn. That means that if he is standing next to you he can parry on your behalf with his arms if you are attacked! He also has an Enhanced Parry 2 [10] allowing him an excellent Parry of 12. (But recall that bare-handed parries are -3 to all attacks that are not thrusting, see p. B182.)
  • Another tank-y thing is Luc’s ability to resist unconsciousness with Hard to Subdue 2 [4]. Similarly, his combat reflexes and the extra points spent on Move make it hard to grapple him. He should do well with contests of ST to break free from grapples.
  • His paranoia is a nice way to justify the fact that he is armored in an everyday modern setting even though he is just a civilian going about his business.
  • In a Horror setting, because of his low Will of 8, this character may fail fright checks and produce the possibly amusing situation of a frightened giant. He’s likely going to be more frightened than other, more average characters.
  • I made up a new talent in a somewhat munchkin-ish way to make some skills affordable while keeping his basic attributes somewhat unbalanced. Sorry! The talent is omitted on the GURPS-O-SCOPIC sheet.
  • I would argue that a reputation for being nuts works FOR you when you are trying to intimidate someone. That would give Luc an additional +2 on rolls to Intimidate. The rules on reputations seem to bear this out. Note that the Intimidate skill also takes size modifiers, for an additional +1. This means under most circumstances Luc actually has Intimidate-16.
  • The Intimidate rules specifically say a display of strength will grant an additional +1-4 bonus to the skill. With a ST 14 [36] character this seems easy to achieve in play, bringing Luc’s Intimidate to potentially 17-20.
  • Unusual Background (Omnilingual) [40] is from GURPS Supers and I find it to be overpriced! It grants accented use of all languages. However, the player really wanted to have this ability.
  • “Lumbering: Can’t sneak” might be a quirk for color with no rules behind it, or you could implement it as the rule Incompetent (Stealth) [-1], which provides an additional -4 to Stealth and prevents learning the skill. Incompetent is from GURPS Power-Ups 6: Quirks. This interpretation drops Luc’s default for Stealth (DX/Average) to a dire value of 3.
  • Note that in the point above, Stealth is not affected by Luc’s size modifier — although you might think it would be.
